Common Issues with Epoxy Flooring Installations

Installation of epoxy flooring in OKC involves various common issues such as bubbles, pinholes, and dull finish. We will now look at some of the major reasons behind these problems and the effective ways to fix them as soon as possible.

Presence of Large-Sized Bubbles

This usually happens when the air begins to get trapped within the coating and does not find a way out. It is caused due to over rolling, over mixing, or higher viscosity of a cold substance, resisting the escape of air. Thicker coatings are more prone to bubbles as they prevent the release of air to a great extent.

Preventive Measures: It is recommended to avoid pulling the substance into a vortex or over mixing a squeegee needs to be applied in both directions and must be back rolled. These bubbles usually show up during the first 30 minutes of laying the coating and can be easily popped.

Improper Preparation of Surface

The existing and the new epoxy floor must share an unbreakable bond to ensure proper installation. These floors are more likely to adhere to a rough existing surface. Imperfections during the installation can be avoided by grinding the surface with a metal or diamond. Also, ensure the cleanliness and dryness of the dust-free surface for a better installation experience.

Presence of Pin Holes

These are often caused by the outgassing from concrete forms. They are commonly seen when the coating is applied over old, porous concrete containing too much water, or when epoxy flooring is done at higher temperatures. You must begin applying the coating when the heaters (blowing hot air) are turned off, the temperatures begin to drop. Also, make sure to use a low viscosity primer while priming the surface. One of the best solutions to fix this issue is sanding, scraping, and recoating the floor. Spot filling seems to be a better option when the pinholes are less in numbers.

Improper Finish in Urethane

Rain, higher humidity levels, and fog are more likely to cause this problem. The solvents found in urethanes cannot find an exit before the curing process of the system begins. It is advised not to use urethanes when the humidity levels are higher or when the temperature stays within the range of 10 degrees Fahrenheit. As this problem cannot be fixed so easily, it is better to recoat the dull coating.
